The concept for Holiday Rental Insurance was conceived by Adam Ware, then a Domestic Account Manager at BJS Insurance Brokers. After receiving numerous enquiries from holiday rental property owners over the summer, Adam identified a gap in the insurance market - there was no suitable cover available for short-term rental properties. He began exploring the possibility of creating a tailored solution.
Adam gathered data from local real estate agents, comparing property damage trends between permanent and holiday rentals. The findings revealed minimal differences, supporting the viability of a new insurance product. Armed with this data, Adam approached insurers to propose a specialised landlord policy for short-term holiday rentals.
CGU Insurance expressed interest in trialling the proposed product. Adam and BJS Managing Director Linton Chapman then travelled to Sydney for some further discussions.
Holiday Rental Insurance was officially launched, underwritten by CGU Insurance.
Adam completed a web development course and launched the first version of www.holidayrentalsinsurance.com.au in early 2014. Following the launch of the website the product grew rapidly, and the first dedicated employee, Teresa Dennerley, joined the team.
Development began on a second product designed for homeowners who holiday-let their primary residence. After further growth, Alex Pizzol joined the team as the second dedicated employee.
The team expanded to seven permanent staff after continued growth. CGU Insurance committed to a long-term partnership and agreed to launch the second product for owner-occupied holiday rentals. Adam Ware was awarded the National Insurance Brokers Association’s Australian Young Broker of the Year, largely in recognition of his work in the holiday rental insurance space.
The team grew to ten permanent staff. Adam received the Australian Young Gun of the Year award at the Insurance Business Awards and travelled to London to deepen his understanding of global and climate risk mitigation. The Holiday Rental Insurance website was redesigned with a modern interface, incorporating automation and conditional logic features to enhance user experience.
The team expanded to 14 staff. Domestic travel surged during the COVID pandemic, driving increased demand for Airbnb and short-term rentals. To accommodate the growing team and support a safe return to work post-lockdown, Holiday Rentals Insurance leased a dedicated office space separate from the main BJS premises.
Holiday Rental Insurance now employs 22 team members, led by Founder & Director Adam Ware, Branch Manager Alex Pizzol, and Team Leader Teresa Dennerley. The partnership with CGU Insurance entered its 12th year, exemplifying a strong and enduring collaboration. Today, Holiday Rental Insurance continues to support property owners across Australia. From beach shacks on Phillip Island, luxury homes in Bondi, to rural retreats in Margaret River, the team provide tailored insurance solutions for all kinds of short-term accommodation.
